MY STORY

My one woman show of Romeo and Juliet at my third grade talent show was my strongest debut. It might even be my peak performance (I’m afraid nothing will ever top it). I had absolutely no idea what happened in the five acts of the play, but I knew they were both two people in love and ended up dying because of it. My eight year old self felt it was my utmost duty to bring this tragic story to life, and turn it into a comedy. As silly as it was, I’d go back and thank my eight year old self for having the aching passion to take a world she felt was hurting and heal it with jokes and pure joy. All while having sand piled in her shoes from recess.

My parents lovingly signed me up for a brand new after school theater program right by my house, and I was so excited to finally be a part of a play. I didn’t find out until the first day that it was in fact a musical and I had to sing that day for the audition. Terrified and wanting to vomit, I pulled myself together and sang the most current song on the radio (Taylor Swift’s You Belong With Me). I ended up with the iconic role of Peppermint Pattie in Your a Good Man Charlie Brown, and thus began my relationship with storytelling.

In high school, I went on an essential journey of discovering what it really meant to be doing theater. I had a moment where I felt the passion slip when the priority was about developing your technical skills instead of telling the story. I didn’t know if I wanted to pursue musical theater or not. Then, my junior year, I had a new drama teacher who introduced us to incredible contemporary plays that were currently happening off-broadway. That was when I realized there was no limit to what a story could do, especially one you get to be sharing live with an audience. I knew I wanted to be a part of new work happening in New York.

New York University has given me gifts to last a lifetime. The most important being the incredible friends and collaborators I have been blessed to create and work with. It is a privilege to be able to experience the most transformative years of my life in the city. There is no other place I would rather grow. Being able to indulge in different curriculums and opportunities within my major has given me a vast amount of tools to not only be a better artist, but a better human.

My sole purpose as an artist is to lead with love, as I believe it is the ultimate and universal goal. I vow to bring my purpose and wholeness of myself to every collaborative process, and to trust the work of myself and the ensemble. My goal is to help create and develop new work that equally results in an insightful conversation and emotional experience. I am looking forward to the continuation of exploring storytelling in different mediums by bringing all of who I am to the table.

Rest in Power Benny. Thank you for teaching me how to be a better artist and human, and how to persevere through anything with joy and love. Showing up and showing out for you always <3
